Experience
Please note that I am available for online tutoring anywhere in the US. In-person tutoring is available on a limited basis in San Luis Obispo County only. As a tutor I aim for my student's self-realization, confidence, and discovery through dialogue. I've worked with high-school and community-college students. As a teacher, my students have been college-level and beyond, as well as the general public in my capacities working in the public art museum context. I am comfortable with technology and have been using digital tools including remote learning for several years in my teaching. I am also very interested in innovative teaching methods such as game-based learning, paired with more traditional assignments and content. I have been a college teacher for 15 years and have held public education roles in museums. I am a knowledgeable and passionate educator deeply invested in student success. I have also taught online and understand the limitations but also advantages that online learning has versus traditional in-person learning. Having created my own teaching strategies in this environment gives me insight into helping students navigate and excel in digital learning environments. Specific teaching and museum experience includes surveys of Western art and architecture in their entirety, contemporary art in global breadth, as well as American art and design, art theory, the history of photography, museum studies, the history of art and science, and the visual and material culture of Antiquity (ancient worlds). My teaching experience also includes non-Western topics including Asian art (India to Indonesia) and Native-American art. African and Native-American art feature in my teaching of American art, with North-African art featured in my Western survey courses. Pre-Columbian art figures centrally in my teaching of Modernism. My interdisciplinary teaching outside art history includes gender and representation, histories of science and technology, museum and gallery administration, research and writing, and historical preservation. Formal statement of teaching philosophy available upon request! Results from a certified CastleBranch background check are also available upon request. Certification pending from National Tutoring Association. [I keep getting errors when I try to upload my picture on this site. Hobbies
In my personal time, I am an avid hiker/outdoors enthusiast, fledgling naturalist trying to learn the native flora, fauna, and geology of San Luis Obispo County, an adventurous home chef, a thinker, a traveler, a writer, a conversationalist. I love art, music, science, and ideas. Lately, I have started to learn how to throw pottery on a wheel (it's a lot harder than it looks!) As a supporter of public arts education I am currently volunteering to write grant proposals for local arts organizations to help with pandemic-related difficulties and changed programming.
